Most moms have two lives if they are lucky. The life they commit to their children and the life they try to carve out for themselves in the professional world. I have had the good fortune of both...and now as a producer, I created a television series that blends both my worlds and it's called DramaMamas. As a former DramaMama, I made sure I dedicated the time and resources so my twin daughters could have the best possible triple threat training NYC had to offer. And when I wasn't carting my daughters to Manhattan four, sometimes five days a week (sometimes even twice in one day...yes don't forget TWINS I SAID), I found time to produce television shows for the likes of MTV, VH1, PBS and HBO. As a single mother, you learn to juggle for everyone.
We will navigate the world of our DramaMamas by telling their stories and validating their journeys. As told through their eyes, we will be entertained and inspired, celebrating the sacrifices and commitment each DramaMama embraces in order for their children to realize their dreams. Our cameras will introduce you to the fabulous world of musical theatre where we will feature guest Broadway veteran mentors and document our talented kids real-life road to discovery. Each performer has a story and a dream but so too does their DramaMama hovering not too far behind. From "page to stage", DramaMamas takes you behind the scenes of the making and launching of an original musical with our cast of newly discovered gifted performers. Sit back, strap in and get ready for a wild ride as the curtain opens to the backstage world of DramaMamas. Break a leg everyone! Dreams really can come true.
DramaMamas is a weekly hour long documentary-series chronicling the journey of launching a Broadway-bound musical, from page to stage. We will showcase the incredible talents of our young performers- as they sing, dance and act their way to stardom, with their DramaMamas hovering not too far behind. Our cameras will introduce and expose the arduous process of casting and staging an original musical, developed around the talents and tenacity of our young performers. Reflecting real life, our series will be a true account of the journey in workshopping an original musical. Throughout the season, our show will recruit a variety of creative “mentors” from the Broadway community to provide constructive guidance for our stars and production creative team as we launch our show within a show and document our talented kids road of discovery.
What is a DramaMama, you ask? As Executive Producer and Creator Linda Sawyer explains, "it's a parent who does whatever it takes to make their kids dreams a reality. Whether it's driving fifty miles to bring your daughter to the best vocal coach or dance teacher or waiting hours while your son sits in a session with the top headshot NYC photographer after she scoured the trades to find one--- a DramaMama sacrifices and makes things happen. She (or he) sits outside audition rooms waiting with open arms for a joyful yes or a tearful no from their child when she hears her son or daughter wasn't tall enough, short enough, old enough, young enough or had the wrong color hair because they weren't the right "type". But a DramaMama keeps believing, keeps encouraging and supporting their kids, reminding them of the hope tomorrow brings. To be a DramaMama is a selfless, all consuming tireless journey. A DramaMama does all this without question, without hesitation, without recognition and definitely without pay. But it's a club that has limitless reward and most members will say it comes with a lifetime badge of honor."
Each performer has a story and a dream but so too does their DramaMama. These DramaMamas never had a title or a badge of honor until now.
And these are their stories....
Maria Kelly Stevens is the consummate DramaMama. “They say I’m living through my daughter… so what?” A true real estate mogul, she understands that location is everything, and she can be found side saddled next to any member of the production team who could perhaps give her a tidbit of information and leg up on the competition. Operating on the spectrum is DramaMama Dad Thom Kennon, oozing with charm and self-confidence, rather than running the room, he sits back and lets Fiona do her thing- until its his time to shine. DramaMama Auntie B struggles to maintain her larger than life personality and support her nephew Samuel, protecting him not only from the dangers of the business but also from an unsupportive Haitian family. Then there is Laurie, the DramaMama of Danny "Disco", who met her husband while performing in "West Side Story". As she proudly hears her son serenading the creative team with his dynamite voice, she beams knowing that he was destined for this world, with parents who share a similar love for the stage. Salena and DramaMama Lisa are a perfect mama/daughter duo- both vivacious, and full of life, Lisa knows her daughter is destined for greatness. But will she be able to accept the feedback of those trying to help her reach her goals? And lastly, we have Linda Miller, DramaMama of Jace, who not only hopes to make her extraordinarily talented son a star, but get her name shining on the marquis with him.
Our series is about a road of discovery not only for the kids but their moms too.
Whether it's the next Aaron Tveit or Sutton Foster, they are bound to be found on DramaMamas. Sit back, strap in and get ready for the wild carpet ride as the curtain opens to the backstage world of DramaMamas.
